Vancouver’s WISTERIA have just released their debut EP Ison’s Wake. The band, formed by LIFE AGAINST DEATH vocalist Claire “Twitchy” Carreras, is a complete departure from the sound which she is known for. Instead of the thrash/death/grind hybrid of her regular band, WISTERIA takes jazz, prog, thrash and doom and combines them into three tracks of genre-bending madness.
The album is now available for purchase here:
Formed in November of 2014 by vocalist Claire ‘Twitchy’ Carreras (Life Against Death, HED?S, Joyce Collingwood) the intention for this new project was simply to see how far outside of the comfort zone one could take themselves musically. As Claire said, “The thought going into this new adventure was, what still makes me uncomfortable as an artist and how far out there am I really willing to go?”
After a Craigslist ad was launched into the outerspaces of the internet, Claire found Taylor Keall. A self described ‘metalhead trained in jazz’, the 17 year old and Twitchy made up the original core of the band. Next to join would be bassist Spencer Trout (Evil Survives, formerly of Wiser Fool) and sludge metal drummer Chris Doyle (Craters). Energetic five string hard funk bassist Chad Watson (The Rising Heat) would later step in on bass after Spencer relocated out east. And so Wisteria (who take their name from a beautiful poisonous purple vine) was born.
After the band had written seven tracks, three of the most diverse were selected for Ison’s Wake. The EP has very strong lyrical themes surrounding humanity’s quest for greater purpose and the search for origin and meaning. Always intrigued with the human species and concepts of space and conspiracy theories, the lyrics have been written in such a way that they are open to interpretation. Recorded at Redlight Recording with sound engineer M. Simpsonelli, the three tracks are available via Bandcamp now.
