The Crimea in Ukraine is a place of rich history both political and social, especially with the 19th century conflict that made it famous in the west and recent goings on with neighbouring Russia. And just like anywhere else in the world, no matter how ambiguous, rich, parochial or wartorn, you will find Black Metal. Here we have the first group I know of from said region: While They Sleep, and their second studio album.

This is a one man project, and I think it’s fair to say he’s made a good try but the band is still finding its feet – for the album opens up with very simple blast beats and guitars that will please someone who likes it raw, and there are vocals that sound like they’re coming from a gloomy cavern in the mountains. So a nice mix there, keeping it simple.

Then as the album progresses we have some slightly more technical moves with songs like ‘The Vampire’ and ‘The Portrait’ expressing this guy’s range of talent, before ending on a note that made me feel quite relaxed in the way only Black Metal can. If you’ve been into this music as long as I have and know of its wide variety then this guy has worked bits of all Black Metal into his output but the arrangement and style was not quite as clear as his expression.

While They Sleep have released an album with much replay value but I think a little more focus on direction might be needed next time the guy goes back to the studio. Nonetheless, enjoyable if you like things that start simple and get heavier as the record spins on.
