Vardan (Vocals and all instruments)
This is the 22nd(!) offering from one man band, Vardan. Originating from Sicily, Vardan passionately delivers a purely desolate, depressive and raw brand of black metal, and since 1997 he has endlessly produced and released material, currently under Moribund Records. This year’s EP offering, Versus From Ancient Times, does not stray from the stripped back, black metal blueprint Vardan has embraced for the majority of his music career, but this is not necessarily a good thing.
There is a gulf of difference between black metal recordings sounding intentionally rough and relatively untampered with in order to stay true to the roots of the genre and to assist in capturing and delivering the atmosphere and intense emotion conveyed in the music and lyrics, and a record sounding like a rushed and poorly executed melting pot of noise. This record falls into the latter category. With just ‘III’ standing out from the thick fog of incomprehensible vocals, over- distorted guitars and sloppy drumming, ‘Verses…’ Was a consistent misery to listen to, and not in a good way. In a wholly awful way. One should know when simplified recording techniques can lend themselves to creating the atmosphere you strive for on a record, and when they make you sound like you have no idea what you are doing.
It is a shame because you would think someone with nearly two decades of recording and performing experience would have understood how to produce good quality music by now, but it appears Vardan is producing whatever the hell he wants and doesn’t actually care whether anyone likes it or not.
