REVIEW:

Ireland’s Scáth Na Déithe are a relatively new band (and certainly new to me) and ‘The Horrors of Old’ is their debut offering.

Scáth Na Déithe play a blend of black, death and doom metal and it’s a really nice blend too. The EP features four tracks, of which two are intro/interlude leaving two fairly epic and meaty tracks and that’s where the real interest lies, though the intro and interlude pieces are also nice in their own right within the full context of the EP.

There’s a black metal sound to the production which has an overall grim buzz to it, not overly produced but still with a very good sound which is perfect for the style and format of the songs. Riffs flow from almost DSBM/Burzumic style to melodic death/doom with flourishes of more aggressive and fast paced blackened and deathly sections. The drums in turn reflect this and are well performed with a nice overall sound and some nice tom work at times too. There’s also an overall melancholic feel to many of the riffs and melodies and an overall doom vibe.

Vocals are predominantly a deathly growl but with mid and high range screams from time to time and are well delivered.

I really like the EP and for a debut offering it’s incredibly strong. I’ll be keeping an eye on this impressive duo’s future work for sure. What’s more, this EP is entirely free to download from the bands bandcamp page!
