The Art of Human Decadence by Italy’s Obscura Amentia is the follow up to 2012’s Ritual LP. What started off as a straight up trashy Black Metal band with rolling drums and fast paced guitars has, with this new album, gone far more into atmospheric black metal with clear doom influences. Its slower and the album starts off very quiet, each track building on the next.

Yet to delve into the realms of live performances this duo has been tinkering away at this album for over 5 years now and seems to convey the bands state of mind over that period, that perhaps modern society with all its technological progress has contributed to the bands mental state and apathy. These are the feelings that they want to convey with this record, not the words, but feeling. This I understand totally as when i listen to a band, I don’t care what they are called, the lyrics they sing or the content, however disgusting, disturbing or extreme. It doesn’t mean a thing to me, only how it sounds and how it makes me feel. This is what Obscura Amentia have tried to accomplish with this 2nd studio album and I have to agree that in this they have succeeded.

I’ve never gotten on well with bands like Marduk, Mayhem (sacrilege I know) but have loved post-black metal, atmospheric and suicidal too. If you like bands like Forgotten Tomb, Gris and Panopticon as I do, you will really like this album. Definitely better than Ritual and this can only pave the way to more progressive black metal in the bands near future.
