Norwegian post-black metal outfit Borknagar are currently back in the recording studio working on their 11th album (10th studio release).
It has been 3 years sine their last release ‘Urd’ and Borknagar, along with their loyal followers, are also celebrating 20 years of Borknagar. A true triumph for a band that has gone the distance and produced a multitude of impressive work. Now back in the studio, Borknagar are in the process of recording another serving of their blackened progressive style which is certain to raise the eyebrows of many a metalhead across the planet.
The band members have been busy with their various other projects with ICS Vortex recently releasing another album with Arcturus and they are now well underway with the recording process as the vocals have been recorded for two tracks and guitarist Jens F Ryland has recorded most of his guitar parts for the album.Borknagar have been using the facilities of Toproom Studio in Oslo and seem to be well underway with getting the various parts recorded. They will be having the recorded parts mixed by renowned and sought after producer and mix-master Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studio. Jens done the mixing for Borknagar’s last release ‘Urd’ so the band are more than familiar with his ability.
For any band 20 years is a monumental achievement. Borknagar haven’t dragged these years out, on the contrary, they have been active both in the studio and on the road. One of the surprising and hair-raising announcements in regards to this release is the return of ex-member and Ulver’s frontman Kristoffer ‘Garm’ Rygg who has laid down some vocals for the album to come. The founder of Borknagar, Øystein G. Brun appears to be ecstatic and it seems that , hey have pulled off a real coup d’etat.
When speaking of returning to the studio, Øystein has said
“These days, 20 years ago, Kristoffer and I hooked up for the very first time in Bergen to record vocals for the BORKNAGAR debut album. Glorious days, indeed. Last night I was barely asleep as I got the first vocal samples from Kristoffer late yesterday evening – and have been listening to the songs repeatedly since then. Being a former bandmate and a huge fan of his work ever since we parted ways back in the days, I certainly did expect a lot, but what he sent over this time around surpass every expectations. Really! Still trying to get my jaw back in position and the goosebumps seem to have turned chronic on me.
Kristoffer performs the lead vocals for one full song called ‘Winter Thrice’ and does additional vocals for another opus called ‘Terminus’.
Being a profoundly nostalgic person this makes me reflect about how damn lucky I am to have been able to work with some of the finest vocalists in the world, throughout the years. Musically the upcoming album will be a celebration of just that. Along with the vocals of Vintersorg, ICS Vortex and Lazare, it should be needless to argue that this will be a very special album! Massively so! More info will follow soon!”
BORKNAGAR released their last album ‘Urd’ in March 2012, marking the 9th studio release in the band’s 18-year career. The album saw the return of ICS Vortex (ex Dimmu Borgir) to the band’s ranks and the release was supported with a rare concert appearance headlining the Inferno Festival in Oslo / Norway, also introducing Baard Kolstad as the band’s new drummer.
